Abstract
The article examines how social media is reshaping the norms and challenges of grieving publicly, particularly among younger generations like Millennials and Gen Z. It highlights the complex, often unwritten rules about who can post about loss, when, and how, revealing tensions between genuine expressions of grief and perceptions of performative mourning. Experts and individuals describe social media grief as both a source of connection and a site of social competition, where public displays of mourning can be scrutinized or misunderstood. Cultural differences in grieving practices are noted, with some societies embracing loud, communal mourning, contrasting with Western tendencies toward private grief. Overall, the article explores the evolving landscape of online mourning and its impact on personal and communal experiences of loss.
