Abstract
This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent scholarly research on John the Baptist, focusing on ongoing debates about his message, relationship to Jesus, baptism, portrayal as Elijah, association with the Essenes/Qumran, and historical accounts such as those by Josephus. It traces the evolution of research methods from historical-critical approaches to sociological and narrative analyses, highlighting shifts toward viewing John's ministry as more ethically nuanced and continuous with Jesus' rather than sharply opposed. The article also addresses contested issues including the nature and meaning of John's baptism, the geographical settings of his ministry, and the reliability of various sources. Overall, it underscores that while significant advances have been made in understanding John the Baptist's historical and theological significance, several questions remain open for further investigation.
