Abstract
This article reviews a 10-CD box set of Wanda Landowska’s recordings, spanning 1933 to 1956, remastered by Torben Widdermann for a 2022 release by Profil. The set includes over 11 hours of music, primarily Bach and Scarlatti works, with notable performances such as concertos with Eugene Bigot and the Paris Conservatory orchestra, and a Mozart piano concerto with the New York Philharmonic. The reviewer highlights the historical importance of Landowska’s interpretations but critiques her stiff playing style, use of equal temperament, and heavy rallentandos, while acknowledging some compelling articulation contrasts and good fingerwork despite occasional errors. The packaging and booklet are noted as minimal and somewhat problematic, but the set offers significant value for collectors and researchers interested in early harpsichord recordings.
