Abstract

This article focuses on Alexandre Dossin’s recording of the piano works of George Walker (1922–2018), presented in chronological order on Volume I of a planned series. Dossin, a Brazilian pianist and chair of the keyboard department at the University of Oregon, offers detailed liner notes and expressive performances of Walker’s compositions, which range from tonal early pieces to later atonal and 12-tone works. The review highlights the complexity and modernist style of Walker’s music, noting its challenging, often dissonant character despite Dossin’s skilled interpretation. The album includes the world premiere recording of Walker’s virtuosic atonal piece “Bauble,” composed for the 1979 University of Maryland International Piano Competition.
