Abstract
This article focuses on the concept of "experience capital"—the knowledge, skills, and wisdom gained on the job—and its role in explaining why women, despite outperforming men educationally, face persistent career advancement gaps. Women enter the workforce nearly equally but are promoted at lower rates and remain underrepresented at senior leadership levels, partly because they accumulate less experience capital than men due to systemic barriers and differences in career moves. The article outlines strategies for women to build experience capital, including choosing employers with strong learning cultures and diversity, making bold career moves, pursuing leadership and profit-and-loss roles, targeting growing industries, and developing technology skills, especially in artificial intelligence. These actions aim to help women overcome structural challenges and improve their representation and success in the workplace.
