Abstract

This article focuses on the life and legacy of Eric Liddell, a Scottish missionary’s son and Olympic athlete who prioritized his Christian faith above athletic fame. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, Liddell refused to run in his favored 100-meter race because it was scheduled on a Sunday, the Lord’s Day, despite facing national criticism. Instead, he competed in the 400-meter race on a different day, winning gold and gaining recognition for his faith-driven choices. After his athletic career, Liddell returned to China as a missionary, dedicating his life to serving others during wartime until his death. The article highlights Liddell’s commitment to honoring God above all and his lasting impact as both an athlete and a servant of faith.
