Abstract

This article examines the complex intracommunity debates within the transgender (trans) umbrella regarding what constitutes an authentic or "trans enough" identity. Using a cyber-ethnographic approach focused on a transgender forum on Reddit, the study identifies three distinct membership strategies: the unbounded identity (UI) strategy, which embraces a wide and inclusive definition of transness; the socio-biological identity (SBI) strategy, which requires some experience of social or physical gender dysphoria; and the medically-based identity (MBI) strategy, which restricts trans identity to those diagnosed with gender dysphoria and pursuing medical transition. The findings highlight how these strategies reflect differing social and biological understandings of gender identity, contribute to internal boundary-setting and "policing," and influence access to community resources and recognition. The study underscores the ongoing tensions and power dynamics shaping collective identity negotiations within the diverse transgender community.
