Abstract
Jacqui Patterson, founder of the Chisholm Legacy Project, is recognized as one of Time International's Women of the Year for her work in fighting injustice. Inspired by the town of Sandbranch, Texas, where residents lacked running water and faced systemic injustices, Patterson's organization aims to address the intersection of environmental issues, poverty, racial discrimination, and gender inequality. By taking on these interconnected challenges, Patterson's approach is both obvious and revolutionary, as many legacy nonprofits tend to focus on only one aspect. Named after Shirley Chisholm, Patterson's organization reflects her intersectional approach to unite fragmented social movements and ensure that marginalized communities benefit from federal climate investments.
