Abstract

This article investigates the socioecological factors influencing hydration status in eastern Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) at Gombe National Park, Tanzania, using urine specific gravity (USG) as a measure of dehydration. The study found that both male and female chimpanzees exhibit higher USG during the dry season, indicating greater dehydration risk, but females had significantly higher USG than males in this period. Among females, those in middle lactation and of lower dominance rank showed higher USG, suggesting reproductive state and social status affect hydration. The findings also indicate that this chimpanzee population may experience chronic dehydration by human standards, highlighting the need for further research on the health implications and variation across populations.
