Abstract

This article from All About History provides information on various aspects of Viking warriors. It explains that Viking warriors would groom and trim their beards, contrary to the popular image of them as disheveled. Viking shields were painted, possibly to hide the grain of the wood and increase their strength with dried animal skins. Viking footwear was made from tough materials like cowhide, goatskin, and possibly sealskin for waterproofing. Axes were the preferred weapon for most warriors, with the Bearded Axe being a common choice. Contrary to popular belief, Viking helmets did not have horns, and only one has been found so far. Chainmail was reserved for high-status Vikings, while others may have worn animal hides for protection. Swords were expensive and reserved for the wealthy or powerful warriors, with some being found in lakes as offerings. [Extracted from the article]
