Abstract
The article discusses the role of comics as essential tools for information-sharing and community building among queer individuals during the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It highlights how these comics provided accessible narratives that countered mainstream public health messages, offering harm reduction strategies and fostering a sense of community among marginalized groups. The concept of "counterpublic health," as defined by theorist Kane Race, is explored, emphasizing how these comics served as activist interventions that reflected the vernacular practices of subordinated communities. The article also details various initiatives and publications, such as the "Safer Sex Comix" series and the "Chicos Modernos" comic, which aimed to educate and empower queer individuals about HIV/AIDS while challenging societal stigma and promoting alternative kinship structures. Overall, it illustrates how comics have been instrumental in shaping health discourse and community resilience in the face of the epidemic. [Extracted from the article]
