Abstract

The article focuses on the political career and legacy of Alberto Fujimori, President of Peru from 1990 to 2000, highlighting his use of right-wing populist tactics and authoritarian measures that undermined democratic institutions. Fujimori rose to power as a political outsider amid Peru's economic crisis and internal conflict, employing populist rhetoric and identity politics to gain support, but later implemented harsh economic reforms and human rights abuses, including forced sterilizations of Indigenous women. His 1992 "auto-golpe" (self-coup) dissolved Congress and led to a new constitution that expanded executive power, while his regime was marked by corruption, repression, and manipulation of the judiciary and elections. Fujimori's political legacy persists in Peru's weakened party system and ongoing instability, with his family continuing to wield influence using similar populist strategies. The article draws parallels between Fujimori's governance and contemporary populist trends in the United States.
