Abstract

This article examines the significant yet often overlooked role of filmmaker Agnès Varda as a female auteur in the French New Wave cinema, focusing on her 1962 film *Cléo from 5 to 7*. It contrasts Varda’s feminist cinécriture—her concept of "film-writing"—with the androcentric and silencing portrayals of women in Jean-Luc Godard’s contemporaneous films, arguing that Varda’s work advances a nuanced vision of female subjectivity and autonomy. Through detailed analysis of cinematography, characterization, and narrative techniques, the article highlights how *Cléo from 5 to 7* challenges patriarchal representations by centering female psychological reality, employing self-reflexive monologues, and depicting empowered female bodies and relationships. Varda’s approach is positioned as pioneering second-wave feminism in French cinema, offering a counterpoint to the male-dominated perspectives prevalent in the New Wave movement.
