Abstract

This article by Edel Bhreathnach explores the life and identity of St. Brigit, a historical figure in Ireland. It discusses the different interpretations of her, ranging from a national saint to a feminist icon and Celtic goddess. The article also examines early Christian texts about Brigit and her possible pagan associations. It suggests that Brigit was part of Ireland's transition to Christianity and discusses the prehistoric funerary landscape in Kildare, Ireland, which may have originally been dedicated to the Celtic god Lug. The author concludes that there is still much to learn about St. Brigit and that current narratives may be influenced by modern cultural interpretations. [Extracted from the article]
