Abstract

This section offers information on the mechanisms and evolution of space toilets being used by astronauts. Topics discussed include the toilet use-related challenges faced by astronaut Alan Shepard in 1961, the liquid and solid waste management system of the toilet on the International Space Station (ISS), and the design of the Translunar Hypercritical Repository 1 that won in the 2020 Lunar Loo Challenge launched by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2020.
