Abstract

The article examines Lorenzo Valla's 1452 Latin translation of Thucydides's "History of the Peloponnesian War," highlighting its significance as the first rendition of this Greek classic into a language accessible to Western European readers. It also discusses the indirect translations sparked by Valla's work in the early sixteenth century, exploring the complex roles of translators and patrons in shaping the reception and dissemination of Thucydides's texts across various European vernaculars.
