Abstract

The article focuses on cosmologist João Magueijo’s proposal that the laws of nature, traditionally viewed as fixed and eternal, may have evolved from a chaotic early universe lacking stable laws. Drawing on ideas from physicists like John Wheeler, Paul Dirac, and Lee Smolin, Magueijo suggests that fundamental constants and physical laws fluctuated wildly before settling into the stable forms observed today, a process akin to evolutionary selection where only enduring configurations persist. This framework challenges the conventional assumption of immutable laws by allowing for early violations of energy conservation and proposes that the current laws emerged as an “absorbing state” from a primordial “higgledy-piggledy” phase. The theory could be tested through ultra-precise atomic clock measurements detecting tiny variations in fundamental constants, offering a novel approach to understanding the origin and nature of physical laws.
