Abstract

This article focuses on Tom Steyer's entry into the 2026 California gubernatorial race to replace term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom. Steyer, a billionaire former hedge fund manager, Democratic megadonor, and climate activist, launched his campaign emphasizing affordability and corporate tax reform. He previously ran for president in 2020, self-funding much of his campaign, and has donated extensively to Democratic causes and progressive initiatives. The race includes multiple Democratic candidates such as Katie Porter and Xavier Becerra, as well as Republican contenders Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco, with no clear front-runner as the primary approaches.
