Abstract
The article focuses on the development of the doctrine of Purgatory in Latin Christianity during the twelfth century, which resolved earlier ambiguities regarding the afterlife for the majority of souls. Initially, early medieval Christians speculated about two intermediate states—'near Heaven' and 'near Hell'—but the adoption of Purgatory consolidated these ideas into a single destination for souls needing purification before entering Heaven. This theological shift was significantly influenced by the revival of Aristotelian logic and the establishment of universities, particularly in Paris, where Peter Lombard's *Sentences* provided a systematic approach to Christian theology. The article also discusses the emergence of centralized papal authority, which played a crucial role in legitimizing and disseminating the new doctrine and associated practices across Western Christendom by the thirteenth century.
