Abstract
The article discusses the topics of repentance, irony, and recusancy in the Robert Southwell poem "Saint Peter's Complaint." Also cited are the contribution of Southwell to Elizabethan literature, the poem's popularity to its congruence with Protestant penitential theory and practice, and Southwell's Jesuit training and immersion in baroque literary culture in Italy.
