Abstract

Building on the argument of the previous article, this article presents a focused case-study of theology among the barbarians. It looks at how theologians at the court of Charlemagne, king of the Franks (768--814) wrote about divine providence and applied it to contemporary concerns in the 790s. It demonstrates that these authors proved capable of orthodox, scriptural, and pastorally relevant reflections on this rich area of doctrine and that -- contrary to the opinion of many scholars -- they warrant the title of 'theologians'.
