Abstract

In an attempt to explain the reason for Spytek of Melsztyn's participation in Vytautas' 1399 expedition, the author used indirect evidence (others do not exist). He assumed that a chain of circumstantial evidence considered in conjunction with each other would lead to an irresistible conclusion. Plotting the background of the political situation at the time, he concluded that Spytek sought to achieve some form of independence from King Władysław Jagiełło. In addition, the author believes that this interpretation is also supported by the king's attitude towards Spytek's family after his death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
