Abstract

The article focuses on the resilience of mountain gorillas, particularly examining the life of Titus, a gorilla who faced significant early adversity but thrived into adulthood. Researchers from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund analyzed data on over 250 gorillas to identify six types of early life adversities, such as maternal and paternal loss, and found that while these experiences were detrimental to survival in early years, they did not lead to shorter lifespans in adulthood. In fact, gorillas who faced multiple adversities showed improved survival rates, suggesting that mountain gorillas possess unique resilience mechanisms. The findings highlight the importance of supportive social structures and abundant resources in fostering resilience, which may also have implications for understanding human responses to early life challenges.
