Abstract

The article focuses on Peter Folger and his connection to Up-Biblum, the first Bible published in North America in the Wôpanâak language. Folger, an English missionary, lived among the Wampanoag people and played a significant role in promoting literacy within Indigenous communities in the 17th century. His efforts, alongside other missionaries, led to the translation and publication of Up-Biblum, which was produced with the help of both English and Native bilinguals. The article also discusses the impact of King Philip's War on Folger's life and the preservation of Wôpanâak literature, highlighting the challenges faced by Indigenous communities during this tumultuous period.
