Abstract

REGULARSDefining Moments29 February 1940At the 12th Academy Awards, Hattie McDaniel picked up the trophy for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mammy, a house servant, in the film Gone With The Wind. She was the first African-American to win an Oscar, though at the awards ceremony McDaniel was made to sit at a separate table because the Ambassador Hotel, where the awards were held, had a no-Blacks policy and had granted an exception for McDaniel to attend.
