Abstract
The article focuses on the examination of American literary institutions around 1900, particularly through the lens of Sinclair Lewis's critiques of the institutionalization of literature. Topics include the coercive nature of literary institutions and their impact on writers, the historical emergence and evolution of these institutions, and the experiences of marginalized voices, particularly Black writers, within these structures.
