Abstract
This recording features three distinctive works by composer Hans Werner Henze, including two rare pieces performed by the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and violinist Ziyu He. The early Concert Music for Violin and Small Orchestra (1944), composed when Henze was 17, showcases energetic outer movements and a haunting slow movement. The Three Mozart Church Sonatas are reimagined with low-pitched instruments and added guitar and harp, creating a unique, organ-like sound with contemporary touches. The longest piece, Il Vitaliano Raddoppiato, is a dreamlike work based on a chaconne theme that blends historical and modern harmonic elements, highlighted by a virtuosic violin cadenza. This recording offers a transparent and intimate interpretation of Henze’s inventive style across different musical eras.
