Abstract
The United States has never had a female President or Prime Minister, despite its reputation as a democratic country that values freedom and equal rights. In contrast, many other countries, including underdeveloped nations, have elected women to top leadership positions. For example, Sri Lanka elected Sirimavo Bandaranaike as Prime Minister in 1960, India elected Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister in 1966, and Israel had Golda Meir as Prime Minister in 1969. Islamic countries like Pakistan and Turkey have also had female Prime Ministers. Finland, New Zealand, and several other countries have elected women leaders multiple times. Germany's Angela Merkel and Liberia's Ellen Johnson Sirleaf are notable examples. Italy recently elected Giorgia Meloni as its first female Prime Minister. Over 55 countries have been led by women since 1960, but the US remains among countries like China, Japan, Mexico, Russia, and Saudi Arabia that have never had a female leader. Various surveys and research have highlighted gender bias in American society, which may explain why the US has not elected a female head of state. Studies have shown that voters often perceive male candidates as more effective and superior political leaders, and women candidates of color face misinformation and disinformation. Women candidates also face intense personal scrutiny and sexist remarks. Despite these challenges, women in America have been fighting for equal representation since they were granted the right to vote in 1920.
