Abstract
This article explores the author's experience of losing their mother to cancer and reflects on the Stoic philosophy of accepting death. The author discusses how their mother, who was Catholic in practice but Stoic in spirit, agreed with the Stoic philosopher Epictetus that it is unrealistic to want loved ones to live forever. The author also examines Epictetus' teachings on accepting mortality and how this can help to blunt the pain of grief. However, the author acknowledges that despite their understanding of Stoic principles, they still feel a profound sense of loss and grief for their mother. [Extracted from the article]
