Abstract

The article focuses on the Myanmar military-led government's issuance of a broad amnesty on April 17, 2026, the first day of the Myanmar New Year, which included sentence reductions and the release of 4,335 prisoners and 179 foreigners. Former President Win Myint was released unconditionally and returned home, while State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, an 80-year-old Nobel laureate, remains detained despite a one-sixth reduction in her 27-year sentence. The clemency order reduced death sentences to life imprisonment, life sentences to 40 years, and applied proportional reductions to other terms. The amnesty is seen by analysts as an effort by newly inaugurated President Min Aung Hlaing to promote national reconciliation following his recent transition to civilian leadership.
