Abstract

The author argues that belief in human progress in General Semantics and Neil Postman is given similar importance. He suggests that Marshall McLuhan may be more closely aligned with postmodern theory than often recognized. He draws evidence from what Postman says of McLuhan in his "Foreward" to the reissue of the Marchand biography to argue that in the end Postman included McLuhan among those whom he thought when too far in applying cultural relativism and thinking that cultural biases vary.
