Abstract

The article focuses on the experiences of an eleven-year-old boy, Robbie Gleason—who secretly calls himself Rook—navigating emotional neglect, bullying, and social isolation following his parents’ divorce and his father’s absence. Robbie endures hurtful remarks about his physical appearance from relatives and struggles with low self-esteem, retreating into a video game world called Zezeroth where he feels empowered. His daily reality includes harassment at school and on the bus, leading him to reject typical social interactions and seek escape by walking home alone through unfamiliar, unsafe urban environments. The narrative culminates in a physical altercation with another special-needs boy and Robbie’s return home, marked by physical and emotional exhaustion, highlighting his profound sense of alienation and longing for connection.
