Abstract

This article focuses on research from the University of Sydney examining the application of attachment theory within Australian child protection systems, particularly regarding Aboriginal families. The study highlights that these systems disproportionately investigate and remove Aboriginal children by applying non-Indigenous frameworks of child development, which misrepresent Aboriginal families’ needs and perpetuate harm. It situates this practice within a history of settler-colonial intervention and calls for a new approach to attachment theory that respects Aboriginal worldviews to support structural change. The research has been peer-reviewed and published in the journal Psychiatry Psychology and Law. [Extracted from the article]
