Abstract

The article focuses on a medieval South Slavonic text of the Book of Daniel as incorporated in manuscript No. 105 of the Chronicle of Johannes Zonaras, preserved at Zograf Monastery. It argues that this Slavonic version was compiled by the medieval Bulgarian scholar Konstantin Kostenečki and presents a unique adaptation differing structurally and lexically from earlier Slavonic and Greek biblical traditions. Through detailed comparison with various Slavonic translations and versions of the Book of Daniel, the study highlights distinctive interpretative choices and textual variants in the Zograf manuscript, reflecting a reworked narrative rather than a direct translation. The manuscript also contains other historical and liturgical texts, and its analysis contributes to understanding the transmission and reception of biblical and chronicle texts in the medieval South Slavic cultural sphere.
