Después de un verano de enseñanza, los jóvenes, un total de 18, toman el examen de cálculo de AP, el cual les daría créditos universitarios. El protagonista es el maestro de matemáticas, Jaime Escalante, que cree tanto en sus estudiantes que propone enseñarles cálculo, un nivel de matemáticas superior.
