Abstract

The article explores the origins of the goddess Othea's name in Christine de Pizan's work and its possible source in a variant of the Histoire ancienne. Topics include Christine de Pizan's authorial use of Othea to provide allegorical guidance to Hector, the manuscript evidence suggesting a variant reading "Hotea la deesse" in the Histoire ancienne, and the implications of this variant for understanding the inspiration and transmission of the name Othea in medieval literary culture.
