Abstract

This article focuses on a Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) outreach project that used the lives and work of the Herschel family—William, Caroline, and John Herschel—to engage the diverse and socioeconomically challenged community of Slough, UK, in astronomy and science. Supported by the Association of Science and Discovery Centres’ (ASDC) "Explore Your Universe: Valuing Inclusion" programme, the project included workshops held at Slough Museum featuring original Herschel manuscripts, hands-on activities, and historical reenactments to inspire participants to envision their future selves in STEM fields. The workshops highlighted the Herschels’ immigrant backgrounds, scientific achievements, and local connections, fostering community pride and interest in science while emphasizing inclusive, experiential learning. The RAS aims to expand this model for broader educational use, linking historical scientific inquiry with contemporary outreach goals.
