Abstract

US Senator Chuck Grassley has announced a congressional inquiry into Boeing Co. and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) following the 737 Max mid-flight incident earlier this year. Grassley expressed concerns about Boeing's safety record and the FAA's oversight in two letters sent to Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun and FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker. Both Boeing and the FAA are already under investigation by various government agencies, including the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Grassley has posed 38 questions to both Boeing and the FAA regarding safety culture, oversight, and policy changes. The FAA has capped production of the 737 Max and required Boeing to submit a plan to address quality issues. Whitaker and Calhoun are scheduled to testify before Senate panels.
