Abstract

This article focuses on the literary and diplomatic career of Witi Ihimaera, a Māori New Zealander whose work spans Māori, Pacific, and Indigenous identities. Initially centered on Māori-Pākehā relations and Treaty of Waitangi themes, Ihimaera’s writing evolved to embrace broader Pacific and Indigenous perspectives, influenced by his experiences as a diplomat and global Indigenous advocate. His notable works include *The Whale Rider* (1987) and *Navigating the Stars: Māori Creation Myths* (2020), which integrate environmental and cultural concerns within Pacific contexts. The article also highlights Ihimaera’s role in cultural diplomacy, Indigenous activism, and the intersection of literature with political and environmental issues affecting Pacific peoples.
