Abstract

The article in the British Journal of Haematology discusses an unusual case of paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria in a 51-year-old female who presented with symptoms of anaemia, jaundice, and a flu-like illness. The patient was diagnosed with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria (PCH) due to the presence of Donath-Landsteiner antibodies. The patient's condition improved with supportive management and red cell transfusions, with resolution of symptoms and anaemia. PCH is a rare type of AIHA that primarily affects children but can also occur in adults, with infectious triggers such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) being identified as potential causes.
