Abstract
The article reviews *Kneecap*, a 2024 film directed by Rich Peppiatt that tells the quasi-autobiographical story of Kneecap, an Irish-language-speaking hip-hop trio from nationalist West Belfast in contemporary Northern Ireland. The film explores the band members’ personal and political struggles as young adults growing up amid the lingering effects of Northern Ireland’s historic sectarian conflict, highlighting themes of cultural identity, minority language preservation, and postconflict trauma. Through a blend of humor, music, and authentic storytelling—featuring the band members playing versions of themselves—the film portrays the challenges of maintaining Irish language and nationalist aspirations in a divided society while addressing inherited trauma and ongoing social tensions. The film’s artistic approach underscores the vitality of Irish as a minority language and the role of irony and cultural expression in navigating and potentially healing deep-rooted divisions.
