Abstract

"The Tattooist of Auschwitz" is a six-part series based on the novel by Heather Morris, which in turn is based on conversations with Holocaust survivor Lali Sokolov. The story follows the experiences of Lali, a Slovakian Jew who is selected to work as a tattooist at Auschwitz concentration camp. The series explores the parallel narratives of Lali's time at Auschwitz and his present-day reminiscences. While the direction and music are criticized as pedestrian, the central performances by Harvey Keitel, Melanie Lynskey, and Jonah Hauer-King are praised, and the themes are considered well-handled and emotionally potent.
