Abstract

Eckert argues that successful authorship in the Romantic era depended on the careful navigation of challenging expectations about how best to establish connections - in and outside of the printed text - between authors and readers. Still, Eckert gives us the tools to see how the Porters would sit alongside her case studies, and Looser makes clear that they were just as widely known - and gossiped about - as the other Romantic writers Eckert examines. The Limits of Familiarity: Authorship and Romantic Readers by Lindsay Eckert, and: Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters, Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës by Devoney Looser (review) Eckert doesn't consider the Porter sisters in her study; the book is framed by the case of another pair of notorious sisters, Maria and Elizabeth Gunning.
