Abstract
They found that overall, male judge sponsors are more successful in helping their former law clerks obtain SCOTUS clerkships, but that female sponsoring judges with greater judicial tenure (seniority) are more successful in obtaining SCOTUS clerkships for their former female clerks. She clerked for Judge Laurence Silberman on the DC Circuit from 1997-1998, and then Judge Silberman successfully sponsored her for a clerkship with Justice Antonin Scalia in 1998-1999. Among the SCOTUS justices, Clarence Thomas, who in some respects might view himself as a very successful underdog ([13]), has been by far the most active in hiring clerks with underdog or nonelite law school backgrounds.
