Abstract

The article focuses on a commemorative event in Secor, Illinois, honoring Wilhelmina "Minnie" Vautrin, a Secor-born missionary and educator who protected thousands of women and children during the 1937 Nanjing Massacre in China. Vautrin, president of Ginling College in Nanjing, remained in the city during the Japanese invasion, providing sanctuary and saving an estimated 10,000 lives, earning her the title "Goddess of Mercy." The ceremony, attended by the Chinese Consul General Wang Baodong and members of the Illinois State Historical Society, marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and highlighted the importance of remembering history to promote peace and cooperation. Vautrin died in 1941, having been deeply affected by the atrocities she witnessed.
