Abstract
This article reviews a multidisciplinary volume on Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717), a German-born naturalist known for her work as an entomologist, traveler, artist, and insect breeder. The collection of 21 essays, originating from a 2017 Amsterdam conference, explores Merian's scientific and artistic contributions, her intellectual context, and her lasting influence, including on botanical embroidery. While the volume offers diverse scholarly and creative perspectives, it includes limited discussion of Merian's involvement with colonialism and slavery, a topic now central to historical scholarship. The work highlights Merian's unique integration of art and science as key to her enduring legacy and value for researchers.
