Abstract
The article focuses on Dr. Edward Teller's January 18, 1983 address at Georgetown University, where he criticized government secrecy surrounding beam-weapon ballistic missile defense and argued that such defenses could end the doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD). Teller asserted that defensive technologies against nuclear attacks are feasible within a decade and that transparency about these developments is crucial for national security and public understanding. He highlighted the Soviet Union's advancements in electromagnetic pulse (EMP) defense and emphasized that a defense-oriented approach, rather than offense, could stabilize peace and reduce the threat of nuclear war. Both Teller and Lyndon LaRouche viewed beam-weapon defense as essential for global economic stability and the prevention of thermonuclear conflict.
