Abstract
This article focuses on a study examining how UK football academy coaches perceive and assess perceptual-cognitive skills (PCS), which are important predictors of expert performance in football. Conducted by researchers at Liverpool John Moores University, the study surveyed 63 academy coaches and found general agreement on the importance of PCS in player development but identified variations in coaches’ familiarity, confidence, and assessment practices. The research highlights gaps in knowledge and application of PCS identification and calls for further investigation to support coaches in improving these skills within talent development environments.
