Abstract
This article analyzes the rhetorical strategies used by political pundits Sean Hannity and Rachel Maddow in their opening monologues on their respective primetime cable news shows, *Hannity* (Fox News) and *The Rachel Maddow Show* (MSNBC). It finds that both hosts employ greeting tokens, personal and collective pronouns, colloquial language, rhetorical questions, and repetition to create a sense of parasocial interaction (PSI) with viewers, fostering a feeling of live, authentic engagement while emphasizing partisan narrative frames. Hannity's monologues focus on criticizing President Joe Biden and his family, while Maddow centers on Donald Trump and related political threats, illustrating how pundit talk reinforces ideological in-groups and out-groups. The study suggests that such personalized and repetitive rhetoric may deepen political polarization and challenge citizens' ability to form independent, competent political opinions.
