Abstract
This article examines the evolution and current state of African Canadian history as a scholarly field, tracing its growth from initial skepticism following Robin Winks' 1971 book *Blacks in Canada* to a vibrant area of research supported by new scholarship, media, and academic programs. It highlights ongoing challenges such as the conflation of African Canadian and African American experiences, gaps in archival resources, and uneven institutional support, especially in French-language universities. The article critiques the inappropriate use of the African American song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" as a Black Canadian anthem during a Canadian military commemoration, illustrating broader issues of cultural misappropriation and symbolic slippage. It also underscores the importance of collaboration among scholars, the need for more inclusive and nuanced histories, and the rich potential for future research on diverse aspects of African Canadian life and history.
